9.7. Preserved/Fixed Phytoplankton Samples & Analysis
Samples preserved with Lugol’s are stored for taxonomy and backup should further data be
needed. Total phytoplankton counts and analysis of Lugol’s samples are done using Utermohl
settling chambers (Paxinos 2000) and analyzed at 2 size magnifications (200X & 400X) using
point counts over 20 randomly selected fields.
