3.2.7. Slurry Injection Procedures
Summary
A 1.1 m

cylindrical cone-bottomed mixing tank is partially filled with water. The pre-
weighed and measured buckets of Micromate are slowly added, followed by the tea, then
the appropriate number of jugs of Arizona Test Dust. The mixing paddle assists with
dissolving these ingredients into solution, creating the “slurry”. The water is slowly
topped off at 1 m

.
To ensure that the contents are always well mixed in the tank, MERC uses two
simultaneous mixing methods:
1.
Continuous stirring provided by a Brawn motor/propeller assembly, and
2.
Occasional recirculation provided by a pump and hose system where the slurry
flows from the tank bottom back up to the slurry surface.
Using an industrial peristaltic pump, the slurry mixture is added to the ambient water
flow stream at a port located before the pump-skid intake sea strainer (located before split
between the control and treated pipe systems). The peristaltic pump flow is finely
controlled using a variable-frequency drive (VFD) connected to the IMAC (logging and
control) system.
Details
Wearing safety gear and working in a sheltered location, weigh out the Micromate into
one or more clean buckets. Cover the buckets tightly.
Slowly pour the Tea into clean buckets. Cover tightly.
Count out jugs of fine AZ Test Dust (by weight required).
Place all ingredients near the slurry tank.
Attach the hose running from the peristaltic pump to the MERC pump-skid.
Attach the hose between the pump skid and the slurry tank to fill with ambient water.
Partially fill the slurry tank with ambient water. Turn the Brawn mixer. (Use the
recirculating system as needed.) Slowly pour the Micromate, then the Tea in to the top
port of the slurry tank (add the AZ Test Dust later). To dampen any foaming,
