SOP2 – Challenge Water Modifications

intermittently turn off the recirculating pump. Use the stirring paddle to assist with
mixing.
Just prior to starting the slurry injection into the pump-skid (when sample team and
vendor are ready), slowly add the AZ Test Dust to the slurry tank, mixing well.
Disconnect the slurry injection hose located on the pump skid intake port located just
ahead of the sea strainer. Energize the slurry pumping system, then flush the injection
hose overboard for one minute. Reconnect the injection hose.
Using the VFD on the IMAC screen, slowly increase the slurry pump speed to the Hertz
required to deliver enough slurry to increase the ambient water to the required challenge
water conditions.
Monitor the slurry tank level during the uptake trial.
Note: The peristaltic pump speed VFD is controlled from the IMAC screen by the facility
manager, program coordinator, or their designee. Backup (local) controls are located in an
electrical cabinet located near the slurry tank. Authorized persons, in direct coordination with
the event manager on any given day, can use local controls.
After the ballast tanks are filled and when the ballast skid operator directs, turn off slurry
pump while closing the pump-skid injection port.
Disconnect slurry delivery hose from the skid and drain any residual slurry from slurry
tank.
Fill slurry tank with fresh water then use the slurry pump to flush out the entire slurry
system (including all pumps and hoses).
To remove residual slurry from the pump-skid pipes, the sea-to-sea option is used,
followed by a fresh water flush.
To prevent damage to the interior slurry pump hose, after fresh water flushing the system,
adjust the slurry pump gear to place internal roller at a position from 90-degrees to 270-
degrees from top-dead-center.
When the pump is not in use for over a week, move the roller to a new place within the
range specified above.
When the pump will be out of service for an extended period, either remove the interior
hose to prevent imprinting or replace it prior to restarting operations.
