3.2.8. 2012 Slurry Injection Data Sheet
3.3. Increasing Live Organism Abundances to Meet Challenge Water Requirements
The liquid mixture created to enhance the ambient water biological conditions to meet ETV
protocols/G8 guidelines is defined as “biological slurry”. Specific species and concentrations
added are determined according to the ambient water concentrations, pump-skid uptake flow
rates, uptake volumes and Test Plan requirements.
3.3.1. Live Organisms > 50 microns
During the testing season (March – November), ambient Chesapeake Bay organisms > 50
µ
m
commonly meet or exceed the challenge concentration of 100,000 live organisms per m

listed in
the G8 guidelines and ETV protocols. However, if necessary, to increase challenge water
concentrations of zooplankton, larvae (> 100
µ
m in size) of the native eastern oyster
(
Crassostrea virginica
) are added. Larvae are obtained from the UMCES Horn Point Laboratory
Oyster Hatchery (www.hpl.umces.edu/hatchery) less than 24 hours prior to use in a test trial.
3.3.2. Live Organisms Between 10 – 50 microns - Augmentation
During the testing season (March – November), ambient Chesapeake Bay organisms 10 – 50
µ
m
in size commonly meet or exceed the challenge concentration of 1,000 live organisms per ml
listed in the G8 guidelines and ETV protocols. However, if necessary, to
increase challenge
water concentrations of phytoplankton, algae cultured at the University of Maryland Wye
Research and Education Center are added to challenge water. The genus used will generally be
