Water Quality Measurements
Version 2.0

6.1. Discrete Sampling of the Challenge Water Quality
During sample collection, a calibrated multi-parameter instrument (such as a YSI 85) is used to
measure temperature (°C), conductivity (mS cm
-1
), salinity (psu), and dissolved oxygen (percent
and mg L
-1
). If the trial requires it, pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) can also be
measured. These parameters are measured at three time-points during testing: start, mid, and end.
The instrument is calibrated prior to each trial run according to the manufacture specifications
and procedure outlined in section 6.3.
6.1.1. Data Sheet – Physical Parameter
See ballast water event data sheet, Section 2.8
6.2. Continuous Monitoring of Water Quality in the Ballast Tanks
One YSI 6600-V2-4 Sonde is deployed into each ballast tank (control and treated) during ballast
water treatment system evaluations to gather time-series data on several water quality
parameters. Measurements include temperature, conductivity, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen
(percent and mg L
-1
), chlorophyll (µg L
-1
), and turbidity (NTU).
6.2.1. Initial Sonde Preparation
Calibration and programming are covered in the 6600 sonde operations manual from YSI
(www.ysi.com/media/pdfs/069300-YSI-6-Series-Manual-RevH.pdf). MERC-specific settings
and procedures are discussed here. Calibrate sensors (except temperature can only be calibrated
by YSI) before deployment (uptake day of a test-cycle). See section 6.3 for MERC calibration
procedures. Record calibration data in the log-book. This information is to specify concentration
of the standard used and relate that to pre and post calibration readings for each parameter. If a
sonde fails to communicate with laptop, check the connections and/or replace the batteries. The
materials used during sonde preparation, deployment, and retrieval are listed in Table 6.1
