6.2.2. Deployment Set up
Prepare to deploy the sondes as soon as the ballast tanks are full and pump skid has been shut
down. Establish bench-top communication with the Sonde via a laptop or a YSI 650 datalogger
and com-cable. In Status menu check battery voltage; should read above 12 volts-if less change
batteries and re-check. In sonde file-management menu options specify site-name and file-name
according to the following: three letter code representing system under test (ST for Severn-Trent
for an example) followed by C (for control) or T (for treatment) followed by test number in that
particular series. Examples: STC1 or STT1. Activate unattended sampling at 15-minute intervals
and start logging. Confirm that the sonde is taking readings by running the sonde in the lab prior
to deployment. Remove com-cable and replace water-proof cap on the com-port. Remove the
solid carry-cup from sensor array and attach the sensor guard. Wrap the guard in a \damp towel
to keep sensors moist until sonde is ready to deploy.
6.2.3. Sonde Deployment
Deploy one sonde into each ballast tank through the upper level hatch; the sensor-array should be
located at approximately mid-depth in each ballast tank. Securely tie the safety line to the side of
the ladder. Close and tighten the hatch.
6.2.4. Removing Sondes from Tanks
Retrieve sondes just before discharging water from tanks. Open the top hatches to the ballast
tanks. Lift the sonde out of the water using the safety line and place in a bucket. Untie sonde
from ladder. Wrap sensor array with a towel dampened with freshwater for transport to the lab.
After returning to lab, remove open sensor guard and replace with transport cup having placed a
small pool of fresh-water in the bottom to keep the sensors moist.
